The parade in Ironton provides identity to the people of the city and the county. Hundreds of stories, histories and traditions march by wrapped up in the floats, fire engines and veterans' groups. The people who volunteer to put on the parade and the folks who gather to watch it understand that this very special event on Memorial Day defines who they are. This is no quick shot event but rather a highly organized important event. The region's identity passes by in every entry, band or civic organization.
This parade is for patriots and not politicians. This is one big patriotic event. I know that sounds contradictory but it is true. Politicians can march if they wish...even provide resources for floats or other entries but the politicians may not campaign, seek support or speak out. Instead, everyone focuses on fallen heroes, veterans and supporting the military. All veterans and those who serve are honored. In the end this is a good action for politicians to endorse.
